Vaturis Variable
Designing a variable typeface
NOV 2022 – MAR 2023
MASTER′S PROJECT – Type Design
Supervised by Prof. Indra Kupferschmid
Vaturis is a variable font that combines subtle serifs with a sans-serif aesthetic. The letter shapes are based on old-style typefaces but also incorporate contemporary design decisions. While the low-contrast variant is suitable for better readability in smaller texts, the font can also be interpolated into a high-contrast version with leaf-like endings, adding more character.
The initial designs of the font were created during a workshop with Ivo Brouwer, but I further developed the typeface as part of my master's project.
As this was my first experience with font design, I took the opportunity to extensively explore various aspects of this art form. In particular, I delved into the theory of letter shapes, kerning, OpenType features, language support, as well as glyph construction using code for diacritical characters, trying to experiment and learn as much as possible.
Workshop with Ivo Brouwer, Typedesigner from The Hague
This project originated from a workshop with the experienced type designer Ivo Brouwer from The Hague. In the workshop, we learned the fundamentals of type design and put them into practice by designing our own letter shapes and digitizing them using the software Robofont. As a result, we created a small web animation that showcased our letters in sync with selected sound effects.
Rundgang Poster
As part of the annual “Rundgang”, the Open Day at HBKsaar, a poster with an AR animation was developed, showcasing the typeface in an interesting way.
