TYPE START
A Typographic Guide for Newbies
AUG 2021 – MAR 2022
DIPLOMA – Book (Design, Contents and Production)
Supervised by Prof. Indra Kupferschmid
Setting type well and making good typographic choices is not always the easiest task, especially for beginners. The lack of typographic awareness is particularly evident in the entertainment industry. In video games, beginner mistakes are often noticeable, and typographic finesse and innovation are unfortunately rare.
Therefore, the TYPE START handbook is aimed at gamers and game designers, explaining the essential practices for working with type through numerous game references and direct examples. The different topics are presented concisely on a double-page spread, accompanied by many illustrative examples. The majority of each page is dedicated to a labeled and annotated example area, accompanied by short texts in English.
The project aims to promote a more conscious perception of typographic details, and the aesthetics of video games help make the topic more attractive and accessible.
For the final examination, only a few copies were printed and self-bound. After several revisions, an initial edition of 25 copies was produced, which were quickly sold to fellow students.
