Using Type

Usage of a variety of typefaces

OCT 2018 – FEB 2019

STUDENT PROJECT – Editorial, Packaging, Cover, Branding, Labels, Signage, Website

Supervised by Prof. Indra Kupferschmid

In the project "Using Type" the goal was to tackle various design tasks using fonts from a randomly selected type foundry. The objective was to utilize as many fonts from the foundry as possible for their respective purposes.

I had the honor of using the diverse catalog of the type foundry "DSType" by type designer Dino dos Santos. At the beginning, each of us created a specimen book containing all the fonts from our respective foundry, which were made available to us free of charge for this project. Afterward, we began working on the individual tasks, typically having one or sometimes two weeks for each assignment.

The design tasks included:

  • Redesigning the Saarbrücker Zeitung (local newspaper)

  • Packaging for a Discounter

  • Book covers for a publishing series

  • Redesign of Café Lolo (local café)

  • Signage for local public transportation

  • Beer labels for a fictional local brewery

  • Website for a local store

Throughout the project, I gained valuable experience in working with different typefaces and understanding how they can be employed for different purposes. The newspaper project at the beginning served as a great introduction to getting to know a wide range of fonts. As the subsequent tasks unfolded, I noticed that I became better at making appropriate font choices.
